Loose Dentures

Many experienced and new denture wearers can experience loose dentures. This sensation can be very frustrating and cause some wearers not to heat foods that they enjoy.

Causes for loose dentures can wary and in this blog we are going to look into some of those causes and solutions.

Loose Upper Denture:

In most cases complete upper dentures stay snug in the mouth due to suction that is achieved by covering the palate of the mouth. If the denture is a few years old one of the reasons could be that the mouth has changed, and the suction is lost. In this case we would recommend a reline of a denture in order to re-establish suction once again.

Another cause for loose upper denture could be the shape of your upper jaw. Sometimes the anatomy of the upper jaw does not allow for the denture to create a proper seal therefore causing the upper denture to be loose. In this case we would recommend implant supported denture therefore not relying on the suction to keep the upper denture secure.

Loose Lower Denture:

Complete lower dentures can be the most challenging dentures for the patients to adjust to. One of the main challenges is that we do not usually get suction with a complete lower denture. This due to the anatomy of the lower jaw and positioning of the tongue. In many cases we can fabricate a lower suction denture which is a specialized technique that is used for impression and fabrication of lower denture in order to achieve suction. Another great solution would be implant supported lower denture and in this case the denture would snap onto the implants.
