Why Cleaning your Dentures is Important

A denture cleaning solution is a critical part of your oral hygiene routine. While dentures may appear solid and brushing twice a day might seem sufficient to clean your dentures, it is not enough. The acrylic material that dentures are made of is actually porous enough to allow bacteria to accumulate deeper than brushing can reach. Therefore, it is critical that you brush twice daily and soak your dentures in an appropriate cleaner once a day. You can easily do this at night while you’re sleeping and have removed your dentures for the day.
Types of Dentures
There are six types of dentures to choose from when deciding on dentures. They are digital dentures, precision dentures, lower suction dentures, standard dentures, partial dentures, and immediate dentures.
Digital dentures
Digital dentures are the highest quality and most technologically advanced dentures we offer. They look the most like real teeth, and they have multiple benefits.
- One visit to scan your teeth and mouth
- No need for impressions or trays
- Thinner and stronger material than traditional dentures
- Precise fit
- Easy to replace by using the initial scan. No need to repeat the impressions process.
Aside from the ease of fitting you for digital dentures, they are much more comfortable than traditional dentures because of their precise fit and thinner material. They also could not be easier to replace. Once we have your digital dentures fitted, this information stays in the computer so that if the time comes that you’ve lost or need to replace your dentures, we can simply prepare a new set to be picked up, or even mailed to you – even if you’re on vacation!
Precision Dentures
Precision dentures are very natural looking and are made with high-quality materials and manufacturing techniques. The process requires multiple steps and appointments:
- Initial impression
- Custom trays
- Final impression that records your muscle movements
- Wax rims to measure bite patterns
- Choosing the right style of teeth for your appearance
- Choosing the right shade for your new teeth
The fitting process also requires a special face-bow measurement to record your bone structure and facial movements. Once the teeth are chosen, we set the teeth in wax so that you can see exactly what the denture will look like before processing the final dentures. At this time we can make changes, reposition the teeth, and really customize how the teeth are set up. The result is a flawless set of customized dentures.
Lower Suction Dentures
We manufacture lower suction dentures using techniques developed by Dr. Jiro Abe in Japan. The seal created in lower suction dentures is tighter than can be obtained in traditional acrylic dentures. The material and process used to create lower suction dentures differs from traditional dentures and is what allows for the tight seal to be like that of upper dentures. This type of denture won’t come loose when you eat or talk.
Standard Dentures
Standard full plate or partial plate dentures have fewer steps in the fitting and manufacturing process than precision dentures. This means that they can look like fake teeth. They are also made of a softer material that will wear down more quickly so they won’t last as long as a higher-quality denture. Because the teeth have a flatter surface, you achieve chewing more by mashing food than by being able to cut through it. Still, standard dentures can be a decent option if your budgetary needs require it.
Partial Dentures
Using either a metal-acrylic combo or acrylic only, partial dentures can replace one or a few missing teeth. They are removable and work by filling in the gaps with artificial teeth. They blend in and look natural while improving your ability to chew food and maintain a natural-looking smile.
Immediate Dentures
We make immediate dentures using impressions or a scan of your mouth with your natural teeth in place. We manufacture them and then insert them immediately after we extract your natural teeth. This will keep you from having to be toothless for any length of time and will help your extractions heal. Immediate dentures stay in place for several months after your extraction surgery.
Preliminary follow-up appointments required:
- Post-operative recovery at home
- Post-surgical check-up the day after the extraction and insertion procedure
- Using cold packs to manage swelling for the first few days post-op
When the oral tissue heals, swelling subsides. The tissue will recede as it heals and will continue to shrink, along with the bone, for up to a year at quite a fast rate. This means more follow-up appointments will be required, such as visits for temporary liners or soft tissue conditioners. A permanent reline, or completely new dentures may be necessary after 12 months to ensure the best fit and proper function.
Are Your Dentures Functioning Well?
Unless you are in a transition phase with temporary dentures, your dentures should always look natural, have a proper fit, and function properly. Questions to ask yourself if you wear dentures:
- Are your dentures out of your mouth most of the time?
- Would you rather leave them in your pocket or a drawer?
- Are your dentures worn out?
- Are your dentures ill-fitting or uncomfortable?
- Are you too embarrassed to smile?
- Are you worried about the look or feel of your dentures?
