Implant Retained Dentures

There are many types of dentures to decide between. Your team at Bajic Digital Denture Center is happy to assist you with making the right choice for your lifestyle. One type to consider is implant dentures. Also called implant retained dentures, these types of dentures can be right for you when the primary concern is the appearance of your dentures and the natural function of the teeth.

Important Distinctions To Know About Implant Retained Dentures

What are implant retained dentures?

Understanding how implant-retained dentures differ from other types of dentures, such as full plate or partial plate dentures, is important. These use bone in the jaw to support the implants that will attach to the dentures. They are used to support a partial denture or the entire row of teeth and are most often used for teeth along the lower jaw.

How do they work?

We place implants in the jawbone. The top component of the implant is a healing cap. This appears along the gums and, after healing, we replace it with a metal connector that your dentures will attach to. There are usually two procedures, along with consultations to address your needs and assess your bone mass. The first procedure is the surgery to place the implants into your jawbone. We then place temporary dentures over the healing cap to allow your gums and bone to heal by limiting the pressure placed on the implants. During the second procedure, the temporary dentures are replaced by the second set of dentures which are attached to the implants.

How Long Is The Process?

This is one of the most time intensive options as it requires extensive healing time between the procedures in order to allow proper fusion of the implants to the jawbone. The time from the first surgery to the last step can take between 3 months to a year.

Advantages of Implant Retained Dentures

Implant retained dentures have many benefits. They are a great option to consider for tooth replacement because:

Preserving Facial Structure

When natural teeth are extracted, the jaw bone loses its function of anchoring the teeth. Because of this, the bone begins to shrink away. Placing an implant will promote bone growth in that area and help preserve the jawbone. A full set of dentures with implants helps in retaining the natural shape and contours of your face while also preventing the jawbone from shrinking and deteriorating.

Comfort

For comfort, nothing beats dental implants. No more mouth sores, irritated tissue, or inflamed gums. The implants have a strong and stable fit that functions the closest to your natural teeth. The implants essentially function as the root of your tooth. You should not experience pain or discomfort while chewing.

With fixed dentures on implants (often called “all on 4” dentures that we provide during our teeth in a day service,) you can take care of your dentures as if they were natural teeth. There’s no need to soak overnight or use denture adhesive.

For removable dentures, the implants are used for connection and stability. There’s a 3 month healing period for the implants, and then we will provide you with your new dentures that will attach so securely they will not move around in your mouth, and will only come out when you remove them for their overnight cleaning.

Confidence

No more shifting or clicking when eating, talking, singing, laughing, or kissing. When dining with co-workers, family, and friends, you can order what you want. This also means you can enjoy better health because of a nutritionally balanced diet. There is no adjusting to talking with dentures, so you’ll enjoy Instant speech clarity because they are just like natural teeth. Other tooth replacement methods are less predictable, but dental implants have long-term reliability.

So, if you don’t want to deal with adhesives these can be a great option. They will also help preserve the bone in your jaw and keep your facial structure intact. Wrinkles can develop around your mouth and jaw in the absence of teeth. Permanent dentures will maintain lip support to minimize wrinkles. Implants are very secure and feel natural, requiring very little adjustment to their presence. Chewing food is easy because the implant retained dentures are not just fake teeth, they are the closest thing to having your natural teeth back.

This is the kind of investment that can last a lifetime, as long as the implants properly integrate with the jawbone. Over time, only the dentures will need to be replaced. Considering most people eat about 1,000 meals per year, dental implants are an investment in your quality of life that you will enjoy for many years to come.
